电影里的主人公亨利·亚当斯，是一个来自美国的穷人，整部电影以他只身到了英国后所发生的事为主线。他刚到英国时身无分文，穿的又破又烂，肚子饿了也没钱买东西吃，走在街上被店家，行人嫌弃，没有人看得起他。正在他苦恼之时他被一对富豪兄弟叫住，这对兄弟正在用一张面值百万英镑的现钞打赌，想知道这张钞票究竟会带给人无尽的财富还是只是一张一文不值的钱。并与他约定一个月内，如果这张钞票完好无损的回到他们手里，那亚当就可以获得任何他们能提供的工作。
拿到钞票后，亚当来到一家餐馆门前，犹豫了很久，他终于鼓起勇气走进店里，很胆怯地找了一个位置坐下，可以看出他是遭过白眼，现在才会变得这么的小心翼翼。服务员并不是像我们所期望的那样很客气的过来招呼他，而是很傲慢地告诉亚当，他坐的位子已经有人预定了，态度是如此的恶劣。亚当很尴尬地站起来，被带到一个偏远的位置，然后服务员去请示了老板才来招呼亚当。当时看到这个情景的.时候我就在想穷人就应该遭到这样的对待吗?就因为怕被吃霸王餐吗?人心一定要这样的现实，以此来维护自身的利益吗?在亚当点好菜之后，服务员也是一副“你付的起钱吗”的表情，看得真的很愤怒。虽然表现是这样，但还是拿来亚当点的菜，亚当吃完后发现时间还没有到到与富豪兄弟约定的时间，他没有拆信封。他实在太饿了，于是他又点了一份相同的餐点，这次服务员就十分不情愿去拿菜了，最后还是在老板的同意下才去拿了餐点，亚当很快又吃完了第二份餐点，但是时间还没有到点，他没有要结账的意思。老板当下就变了脸，不给好脸色地要他付钱。亚当拿着信封说要再等一下。恶劣的老板直接就抢过信封拆开，当他看到钞票上的数字顿时就傻了眼，之后就像重新投胎了一样，把之前的嘴脸完全忘了，而是一副毕恭毕敬的样子。真的是变得太快了，不禁让人感叹人心的虚伪。
之后也是讲述了亚当到其他店里的一些遭遇，拿出钞票前和钞票后，无一店家是保持同一样的态度，都和餐馆里的老板一样，没见钞票以前一脸漠视，见了钞票都把亚当当爷。这些都充分体现了现实社会中拜金主义的丑恶面孔，他们视财如命，对待穷人和那些流浪街头的乞丐，总显得不屑一顾，更不要说尊重他们。而对于那些有钱人，他们就像哈巴狗一样讨好奉承。在他们眼里所有的一切都以钱来衡量，有钱就是“爷”，没钱的人他们连正眼都不瞧，很讨厌这样的一些人。
相反很喜欢主人翁，在他拥有一百万英镑后，虽然一开始他有点乐不思蜀，但他丝毫没有因为那一百万而改变自己，变成和那些拜金主义一样的人。还是保持它原有的态度，其实开始对他是有点“哀其不幸，怒其不争”的心理。想到他在没有“亮”出钞票前人们对他那种态度，他居然在拥有钞票后没有给那些人一点“颜色”瞧瞧。后来发现我理解错了，如果那样的话主人翁和那些拜金主义者又有什么区别呢?这也是主人翁值得赞美的一个地方。经过丢失钞票事件之后他厌恶了拜金者的嘴脸，他也明白什么是他想要的，正是因为他的好品质，他收获了一份真挚的爱情，抱得美人归。即使后来他归还了一百万英镑，那个女孩还是和他在一起了，甚至是更爱她了。
钱在我们所生活的今天的确是很重要的，吃的，喝的，住的，都需要钱来换得。没有钱生活会很困苦。可是钱并不是我们活在这世上唯一追求的东西，只为钱而活着的人生也没有意义可言，在有钱人面前低头哈腰，虚伪地讨好，出卖自己的灵魂，就这样被钱财迷惑而不可自拔，成为钱的奴隶对待穷人又是那么不屑一顾，我想这样的人是不可能快乐的。人与人之间应该友善相待，真诚相待。不管穷人富人。这样的相处之道才会使我们彼此之间感受到温暖。如果对待一个人的态度取决于这个人财富的多少，那这个世界将变得没有人情味。
