A Scene to Remember Gu QiubeiShanghai International Studies UniversityAdvisor: Gong LongshengGood afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.Today I would like to begin with a story. There was once a physical therapist(临床医学家) who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a census(调查) about mountain gorillas(大猩猩).

These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of poaching(偷猎) and being put into the zoo.

She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures.

She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged weve ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled(拥抱) their babies.Yes, thats a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs.

Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the eco-environment there until the very end of her life.To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless(永恒的) reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems.

On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go.

It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth.

It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity.

But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes arent natural anymore.

Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal.

Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica.

Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks. All these appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been eroding(侵蚀) our resources.

Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 20xx the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the worlds attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our eco-environment.Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and invalids(残疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do.

These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood.

Why? Because they care, because they still want their Mother Nature back.

Because they know it still belongs to them.

This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, its all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish. The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs.

I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else.

a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer. And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that its lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.Once again, I have come to think of Mrs.

Dian Fossey be- cause its with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our eco-environment that we are taking our next step into the world. And no matter who we are what we do and where we go, in our mind, theres always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

  Thank you very much.

The Doors that Are Open to UsGood morning ladies and gentlemen:The title of my speech today is The Doors that Are Open to Us .The other day my aunt paid me a visit.

  She was overjoyed.

I got the highest mark in the mid-term examination! she said.

Dont be surprised! My aunt is indeed a student; to be exact, a college student at the age of 45.Last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college.

This was the wisest decision I have ever made, she said proudly like a teenage girl.

To her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.

as quoted from “how to make steel”: the most precious thing to us is life. we can only live but once, thus, our life should be like this, when looking back, you don’t have to be regretful about those wasted time and shameful about the mediocre life. then till the end of his life, we can conclude that we have devoted our whole life to the most valuable thing in the world----dedication to human’s liberation. these sentences touch me most, and remind me to think about how we should live through our life, and what the most important thing in my life is! looking retrospectively about my past twenty years, lot’s of failures. but i know that the future is in my hand. there is one more important thing in my life is to cherish, cherish the person loves you and you love.

well, to be honest, i don’t think i was such kind of a filial daughter. because all i think about was to get away from then as far as possible, to free myself. i never have the feeling of homesick, even though when i stepped into my home and saw my lost-lost mother. in fact, my heart has been in self-approach.

but, what should i do? it seems strange for me to say “ i love you” to them, because they don’t need those unpractical words, by the way, i’m not good at it. so i decided to concentrate myself on study to repay them, which seems to be passive. but today, one thing happened strengthened my feeling about them.

i have sore throat all these days. i didn’t take it serious, because i think it will recover soon. however, the condition became worse. except headache, fever, runny nose, sore throat, slight tiredness, i was all right. to my disappointment, the latest clinic is being reconstructed, and i have no idea about other clinics. so i tended to my native friends for help, one was no answered, the other is shutdown. the first person hit upon my mind was my sister, who is far away from me. she did all she can to comfort me and give me suggestions. i didn’t realize it how touched i was as soon as i finished my conversation, my mother called me. i’ve been trying to ail myself, but without success, with large drops of tears rolling down upon my check. i can’t remember exactly what’s it saying on the other side, my helpless, lonely heart was saved eventually. in order not to let her worry, i turned off it in a hurry. how uselei was! with the helping of my roommate, i went to see the doctor. and now i’m better.

this small incident teaches me that the most important in our life is to cherish the person you love and the person loves you. my friends, we can only live but once. why not cherish and repay those you’ve owned? don’t regret till we are old!

In our daily lives, we have many choices to make, such as what to eat forsupper, what clothes to wear, or what to do on weekends. at certain times in ourlives, we need to make even more critical choices, such as which school toattend, what job to take or who to choose as husband or wife. yes, life is amatter of choice. seemimgly, it means a choice of tangible things. but inessence, it means choosing a way of life. life is to be lived, savored, andenjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about. Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat from the life-and-death disease--sars. yet, even during those dreadful times, someafflicted people remained optimistic. instead of wearing neutral white masks, some people turned to colouful ones, and thus display a happy mood. and somecreative people dubbed sars to mean "smile and remain smiling." i was deeplytouched by their optimisim, nearly forgetting that we're still in a battle.people who survive these kinds of circumstances, (at some point)decide in theirminds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds. Laid-off workers, typically regarded as the victims of economicadvancement, are subject to desperation that being unmeployed has brought onthem. but, encouragingly, we have witnessed some of them striving hard torebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstratingtheir values. Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoidunexpected disasters and adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to liveoptimistcally,to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes. Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approachlife that day. as for me, i choose to be cheerful.

  Ladies and Gentlemen:

How well are we in tune with the rhythm of life? In our busy day to day existence, we don’t often stop to ask ourselves this question. At least I don’t. And it wasn’t until I joined a competitive sporting event that I learned a most important lesson – we must place our mind in harmony with the natural order of things to be successful.

Let me tell you what happened.

I decided to take part in an International Marathon in my hometown last year. Being an ambitious person, I hoped to finish it within 5 hours, accompanied by my friend with whom I had trained.

The big day finally arrived. “Ready...set...bang” And we were off.

At first, we kept a rapid pace and ran nonstop. At this pace, we finished the first 20 kilometers in 2 hours and I thought running a marathon was a piece of cake. Then my running mate began to slow down. I urged him to keep running at the same pace but he said no, he wanted to conserve his energy. I felt I had partnered with the wrong person, therefore, I sprinted on and left him behind in the dust.

A few kilometers later, I began to understand his strategy as my pace slowed to a jog then a walk. After that I was incapable of moving another step. I was humiliated as more and more people ran passed me. More than once I thought “Maybe I should quit.” I started to doubt my ability to finish this race.

At this moment, my running mate caught up with me and slapped me on the back. “Follow me,” he shouted. He had balanced his marathon pace and was encouraged me to do the same. For the rest of this grueling contest, we walked, jogged, ran a few miles, and walked again. Slowly, painfully but hopefully this time, we established the most suitable pace within the natural flow of our physical capabilities.

Eventually we accomplished our first Marathon of 42 kilometers in 4 and half hours. I asked myself, what did this marathon mean to me? My Marathon experience became an influential metaphor for my life about how we must learn to pace ourselves in everything, by being in tune with the rhythm of life.

Like the tide that ebbs and flows, we must listen to advice but make our own decisions. Like the show at dawn and dusk, we must learn to balance pride and modesty. And from the way the wind can both shout and whisper, we must learn when to be strong and when to be gentle, for everything moves in its own rhythm and its own yin and yang elements. It is the interaction of these complementary extremes that produces harmony, as Laozi said, extremes meet. Since the marathon, this notion of two opposite forces working together has been my running partner, so to speak. Yin and yang exist everywhere, constantly interacting, and never existing in an absolute condition.

Ladies and Gentlemen, life is like running a marathon, let us discover, define and develop a natural rhythm of life, in order to achieve both harmony and success.

  Thank you for listening.

Good morning/afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:

The Restriction to Creativity Is My Top Concern

Have you ever wondered how many plastic bags our nation uses a day? Would you believe it if I said that total could fill an entire three-story building? Yes, sadly that’s right. In China, more than 20 billion plastic bags are consumed everyday, making our country’s plastic pollution unbearable. Nowadays, plastics have been considered as the worst invention the 20th century while back in the 1890s it was regarded as a groundbreaking creation. From the case of plastic bags, we can see that creativity should be guided, cultivated and well adapted.

From steam engines to space ships, from abacus to computers, each major invention brought human beings into a new era, providing us with comforts and fortune. But when pulled away from the spotlight, we can realize that creativity has also brought us into the shadows of environmental pollution, nuclear wars, and unethical scientific experiments. Shouldn’t industrial creativity be restricted to save the Amazon forests? Shouldn’t military creativity be constrained to avoid nuclear Genocide? And would it be better if scientific creativity were supervised to save us the trouble figuring out whether a cloned human should call its genetic provider daddy or what?

In the mean time, the power to dream also has a major impact on social ethos. There’s no denying that anti-racism, human rights and what gave me the chance to stand here today—women’s liberation have engaged us into a more civilized world. However, that does not mean social ideas do not have the power to produce alarming effects. During the WWII racial ideology resulted in the massacre of 6 million Jews and in China, our population policies before the 1980s gave us more than 500 million people in just 30 years, putting heavy burden on both the environment and economy.

From all these examples above, we can conclude that what creativity can offer us should be a concern. So, today when everyone is stressing the importance of bringing creativity into our lives, I stress on putting restriction on creativity. Because with no restriction, there’s no order! Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, let us have a little restriction to creativity and it will benefit us and the generations to come!

  dear classmates,

every one of us, rich or poor, should at least have one or two good friends. my friends will listen to me when i want to speak, will wipe my eyes when i cry, will take care of me when i am sick, and my friends will go together with me side by side through this journey of life. as students, we could share more time with our friends. the friendship in our young hearts is pure, fresh and simple. i often feel very lucky to have a lot of good friends. especially when i had justin as one of my best friends. justin was my english teacher from the usa. i met him in 1996 when i was a student who could only speak very little english. justin was a vivid young man with a bright smile on his face, and he always had his special way to make the class active and attractive. he taught us english by telling stories, playing games, singing songs, and even dancing. i could still remember very clearly that one afternoon when we fin-ished our class, we went to some other classes to sing songs for them, just like what people do in the states on christmas eve. it was so interesting and unforgettable. justin was an excellent teacher, because he taught us not only how to study english well, but also the way to find out the beauty of the world and the way to be angels to others' lives. i know there was friendship and pure love in our hearts. facing this valuable emotion neither nationality nor age was important, the real importance lay in faith, under-standing, and care. justin is the best friend i have ever had, and i know i will cherish those days of staying together with him as the best part of my memory. friendship is a kind of treasure in our lives. it is actually like a bottle of wine, the longer it is kept, the sweeter it will be. it is also like a cup of tea. when we are thirsty, it will be our best choice, but when we have enough time to enjoy ourselves, it is also the most fragrant drink. however, in this fast-developing modern society, the reality is not that. more and more people forget to enjoy the beauty of life and -the beauty of friendship. they work hard in order to gain a higher position, in the society and to earn more money for their work. of course, we don't deny that it is important to find a bet-ter place in our lives, but we wish more and more people could pay a little more attention to themselves and their friends. all of us have to spare some time for personal lives. we have to find the chance to express our emotion and love. when staying with our friends, we can release ourselves completely. we can do whatever we want, we can laugh together, talk together, and even cry to-gether. i should say that being together with our best friends is the most wonderful moment of our lives. as we know, we would feel lonely if we didn't even have a friend. but it doesn't mean we could depend on our friends all the time. there is a famous motto saying that “a friend is like a quilt with cotton wadding, but the real thing that keeps you warm is your own temperature.” it is really true. we have to work hard together with our friends, encourage each other and help each other. when we receive love and friendship, we should repay as much as we can. finally, let's pray together now that one day, all of us could find

the person we want to find, and could enjoy a real beautiful friendship in our lives. let's pray the flower of friendship be-tween our friends and us would always bloom brightly in our hearts.

saying goodbye to childhood,we step into another important time in the pace of young, facing new situations, dealing with different problems..... everyone has his ownunderstanding of young,it is a period of time of beauty and wonders, only after you have eperienced the sour ,sweet ,bitter and salty can you really become a person of significance.thre time of young is limitted,it may paby without your attention, and when you discover what has happened ,it is always too late.grasping the young well means a better time is waiting for you in the near future,or the situation may be opposite . having a view on these great men in the history of hunmanbeing, they all made full use of their youth time ,to do things that are useful to society,to the whole mankind, and as a cosquence ,they are remembered by later generations, admired by everyone.so do something in the time of young, although you may not get achievements as these greatmen did ,though not for the whole word, just for youeself, for those around! the young is just like blooming flowers, they are so beautiful when blooming, they make people feel happy, but with time passing by,after they withers ,moet people think they are ugly.and so it is the same with young,we are enthusiastic when we are young, then we may lose our passion when getting older and older.so we must treasure it ,don't let the limitted time paby ,leaving nothing of significance.

The story with English and me

Hello everyone,it is glad to meet you,my name is Nong Yanxing, you can also call me Virita, It’s my English name. I am a Howell School’s girl and I am an outgoing girl too, so I like playing jokes with others.

I am fourteen years old and I have learnt English for six years now I’ve loved English since the first time, I’ve heard it from a tape. The voice from the tape was very wonderful and the language was so nice time I thought, how wonderful the language is! And if I can speak English as well as the speaker in the tape, that will be amazing! So I asked my mum:“Can I learn English? I really love it!” “Of course you can,but are you sure about it? Can you insist on it?” She was a bit excited. “Of course I can, mum. I love it very much,I want to learn it. ”I said confidently,“Oh,my good kid,you are very good,I am so excited about you are interested in English. ”She gave me a sweet hug. We laughed together. Then,I’ve started my English learning way.

At the beginning,I loved English because it sounds comfortable ,but I can’t believe that how difficult to learn English grammar. Then I felt tired, and I really want to give it up. Buton that main time,my English teacher found me was a bit strange,“What wrong with you,Virita? You look a bit strange.” “Nothing, I just think English grammar is so difficult. It is boring,I don’t want to learn it anymore!” “Why?You can’t give it up,Virita. I can help you just trust me.”“Really?” “Of course!” Then she helped me with my English grammar after class everyday. She told me how to find a good way for my own to learn English grammar. How to find a good way to remember the English new words. She told me try to love English! Interests is the best teacher! So my English marks improve very fast. And in the finally exam,I got the best marks at school. I was so happy my English teacher warned me again “Don’t be proud of it. Hasty climbers have the sudden falls. You should come on!”

I also like watching Holly Wood movies, for example, The Green Man in the Avengers is very strong and V in V of vendetta is very cool. Most of actors and actresses speak English in the film, and I really want to understand the whole meaning about a film without any caption one day. Itis difficult for me to make it come true. I should work harder.

English is a very beautiful language itis my friend,a real friend. Although I can’t feel it with my hands, but I can feel it with my heart. English brought me a lot and I have a big dream about English. To make it come true ,I should work harder and learn more Western culture. We’ll love each other more and more.

This is the story with English and me.

  Thanks for listening.

on my birthday two years ago, many special things happened on me。 and i would

  remember them forever。

that morning, i rode my bike to school happily as usual。 on my way to the

classroom, i saw some of my classmates。 but when they saw me, they rushed away。 that made me confused。 because they would talk to me or play jokes on me before。 but it was strange today。

when i came into the classroom, i found the atmosphere was quite strange。

everybody looked at me and laughed loudly。 suddenly they all said in good order,“happy birthday to you!” then they began to sing “happy birthday to you~~~~~~” that made me moved。 i never told anyone about my birthday, how did they know? i believed they must have done a lot of things。 at that moment, i found nothing to say but thanks instead!

after school, a thing ing as a surprise happened on me on my way back home。 when i was riding suddenly a crowed of people rushed out to stopped my bike。i recogized them at once。 they were my senior classmates。 they all lained to me,“why don't you tell us about your birthday? don't you fear that we will let you stand treat? this time you owe us。” then each of them gave a gift and a card with best wishes to me。 i was deeply moved again。 i suggested having a dinner together。 but they all refused because of the time。 then they left me saying we would ask you to pay us another day!

when i got back home, i thought of everything happened today。 suddenly i felt so happy because i had such great friends around me。 i thanked them from the bottom of my heart。 i would value the precious friendship forever!

i have so many feelings through that special day。 the only rose without thorns in the world is friendship。 a true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart。 truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget。 one friend in a lifetime is much, two are many, three are hardly possible。 stick to make friends, forlife without friends is like life on a desert island。 to find one real friend in a lifetime is good fortune, to keep him is a blessing。

  thank you for your attention!

Hello, dear judges! I'm . Please look at my picure. In my picture, there are two lovely rabbits. They are my pets. Although a lot of people think that children should not have pets at home, because they're dirty, However, in my opinion, children should have some pets at home, because when children learn to take care of the pets, they also learn how to love others. In fact, I suggest every child have a pet at home and take care of it himself. Otherwise, they cannot learn to love other people and animal. Thank you!

  Good morning, Everyone!

I will talk about sports. I am an active boy. I like many kinds of sports, such as walking, skating, climbing, cycling and skipping. Doing sports gives me a good health and brings me a lot of fun. Now, I will tell you about my cycling sport. I often ride my bicycle when I am free. I like to ride my bicycle on a road near my house. It is an empty road. There are no cars and few people walking on the road. It is about four kilometers long. It has several long slopes. So it is very good for cycling. When I ride down the slopes, the bicycle runs very fast, and I feel I am flying. Thats a very good feeling for me. When I ride up the slopes, it is very difficult, but it is a good training for me. I always try my best to ride up as long as possible. Cycling there gives me lots of fun.

Everyone can get ill, but doing sports is a good doctor. I know an English saying "Exercise one hour a day, keep illness away." My own story has proved it. I once had an illness. I had to go to see the doctors and take medicines very often. After doing sports for several years, I have recovered now.

Doing sports gives me a strong body and brings me lots of fun. So if you want to be strong, please do sports; if you want to enjoy a happy life, please do sports, too. Thank you!

  Welcome to Guangdong

Ladies and Gentlemen, Honorable Judges, Good afternoon.

I come from one of the most lovely and attractive areas of China, the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province and I'd love to say a few words about this area that is so dear to my heart.

Guangdong Province is a magically beautiful wonderland, with endless natural treasures. The lush and green mountains are inhabited by songbirds and exotic animals; the farm land is fertile and productive, providing all of its people with wonderfully nutritious grains and all the fruits they need to be healthy and strong. The Pearl River meanders through the province and eventually comes to our beautiful seashore with crystal clear blue water, flourishing with all kinds of different fish and sea creatures. All these natural advantages help to boost the ever-expanding economy of Guangdong and increase the welfare of its people.

Guangdong is privileged to have such a beautiful landscape, with hundreds of historical sites and places of great interest to local people and foreigners alike. Our capital city, Guangzhou, is also known as "the city of flowers". Everywhere you look you will see flourishing plants and blossoming flowers overflowing with vigor.

The people of Guagdong are very friendly to visitors from anywhere. Whoever you are and wherever you come from, Guangdong people will greet you with the only language---Guangdong dialect.

Guangdong is also known as the Chinese capital of delicious food. There is an old saying that "The only best delicacies are in Guangdong.” Food from this province is internationally famous. Its variety of tastes, shapes and colors can satisfy even the most refined palette. I'm sure, the moment you seat yourself at a Cantonese banquet, your appetite will naturally become keen and eager to taste all the numerous delicacies of the region. Here are but a few I will mention in passing: steamed fish in ginger sauce, seasoned chicken, drunken shrimp, dance fish balls, fried jellyfish, roast suckling pig or duck, braised crispy chicken or squab, shark fin soup, moon cakes, refreshments and desert, and so many more. My mouth is watering just at the sound of these wonderful dishes.

I would like you all to know that there is truly nowhere in the world I would rather live and I invite you all to come discover the hidden treasures of my hometown. I would be glad to serve as your personal guide.

  Thank you all.
